Shari Klarfeld & Wai Ching Soh on Top of 1 WTC

Tunnel To Towers Climb New York City is a very very special one. One World Trade Center (until 2009 Freedom Tower) is the highest building in the United States and it stands on the ground where until 9/11 the original Twin Towers were …

The event is the flagrace of the Tunnel To Towers Foundation and there is no other race with a comparable emotional background. On June 5, 2022 we saw the 6th edition marking the revival after a 2 year corona break and as always the elite athletes started the climb at the a lttle bit unusual time of 5.a.m.

It was the day of Shari Klarfeld. After a series of podium spots at Empire State Building Run Up as well as at all previous editions of T2T Climb NYC the Long Island resident finally climbed to victory. Her time of 15:53 was the second best overall and 9 seconds faster than 3rd overall and female runner up Maria Elisa Lopez from Mexico. Finally on the podium at 1 WTC was Florida living Rosalyn Russell (PHI). After a series of wins including US Championships at the Strat Jill Paha had to be content with 4th place this time before another Mexican athlete, Elizabeth Aguilar. Familiar faces on 6th with Verity Rees and 7th with Tricia O’Hara, who crossed the continent from San Francisco to attend this special event. The strongness of the women field is shown by the gender parity fact that Tricia’s 19:15 marked 14th place overall !

Wai Ching Soh was the undisputed favourite before the race and as expected the Malaysian World No. 1  added 1WTC to the long list of buildings he had climbed victorious. Probably his winning margin percentually seen marks record in a stair race; His 12:46 was more than 3 minutes faster than Shari and more than 4 minutes faster than the male runner up, Roberto Velazquez. This very active President of Towerrunning Mexico celebrated his greatest personal success on the stairs while East Coast Towerrunning veteran Stephen Marsalese excelled another time taking the last podium spot.
