March 9 – St. George’s Tower – Leicester
Despite some very windy conditions on the start line almost four hundred runners from all over the UK turned out to take on the tower at Leicester’s St. George’s Tower on Saturday 9th March. Competition at the top end was very close with David Harris leading the way for much of the event in a time of 01:33.26. It took Liverpool’s Mark Sims a 2nd attempt to knock David off the top spot right at the very end, taking a narrow victory with a new PB in just 01:31.96. Elliot Slaughter who won the event in 2018 remains the only person to ever go sub 01:30:00 in Leicester.
In the women’s race the up and coming Sarah Frost dominated again, smashing her previous best by six seconds and setting a new women’s record of 01:43.82. Susie Drinkwater took 2nd place but it was a close battle with Sonja Shakespeare finishing just one second behind her in 3rd place.
The LOROS Tower Run prides itself on being a very inclusive event, with many on the day taking their first steps into the sport. The oldest climber was eighty-three years old, whilst the youngest was as young as five! There were some big teams put out by local fitness clubs including SWEATBOX and ActiveLifestyle, as well as some very impressive fancy dress outfits including Santa Claus, Batman, Spiderman, and an entire party in wedding dress!
Over the past four years the Leicester-based event has grown from humble beginnings with just 38 runners in 2016 into now one of the most-popular tower running fixtures in the UK calendar. Whilst the event has seen runners from Spain, Austria and Germany make the trip across the pond in that time, none have been able to topple the British winning streak at the event so far.
