towerrunning World Cup 2009

There are stair races in many different countries all over the world. Runners climb skyscrapers, towers and outdoor staircases. The main concern of the elite runners is to be faster than the others - most of us climb stairs for fitness reasons very often combined with a charity aspect and we like race atmosphere.

The idea of this World Cup is to create a ranking for elite stair racers taking into account that for obvious reasons there are not many possibilities of direct competition.

After Sky Rise Chicago one thing seems to be clear - Germany will win the Nations Cup and the United States will remain on second place. With a new course record at the now called Willis Tower Germany´s Matthias Jahn managed to win three races on different continents this year ! On the podium and under the old record too in this high class race were previous winners Terry Purcell and Jesse Berg. As used to be Cindy Harris was the fastest Lady with her second best time ever - after seven straight wins at Go Vertical in Sears Tower times she is still to be beaten there. Jennifer Carder and Catherine Demet placed second and third.
In Europe we had the first ever stair race in Slovakia - organised ( and won ! ) by Tomas Celko.
October 7
At the most traditional German race at the historical Perlachturm in Augsburg once again Roland Wegner demonstrated his superiority at stairsprinting ! Runner up with Raphael Schumacher another German topsprinter. In Barcelona Daniela Vasalli clocked her third World Cup win very narrowly beating local Tina Gomez.
September 29
The Czech Runup Series - see overall ranking - was won by Slovak Tomas Celko beating Czech Pavel Holec and Poland´s Tomasz Klisz. Winning the final race in Praha Martina Vevodova won the women´s crown. Runup Series bonus points for World Cup.

After this weekend Thomas Dold is definitely the World Cup winner - Congratulations !

In the Nations Cup it is still open between Germany and the US !
September 27
At the Stair Climb to the Top at U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles Terry Purcell was 9 seconds faster than Javier Santiago. Third on the podium Jesse Berg. Surprise Lady´s winner was triathlete Erika Aklufi.
Winners of the final race of the Czech Runup Series in Praha were Martin Kucera and Martina Vevodova.
The third race within a week in Austria at Hall/Tyrol was won by David Kreiner - like the 3rd
Christoph Bieler better known in winter sports. Between them mountain running champion Markus Kröll. International the women´s result: Another victory for Marie-Fee Breyer beating Silvia Olejarova and Izabela Zatorska. Man of the day was Linz winner Norbert Lechner who managed to finish on position 8 despite a bad fall which unfortunately means season end for him.
September 23
Two Races with elite runners in Austria: In Linz the youngsters were faster; Norbert Lechner had his first World Cup win beating Michael Reip followed by experienced champions Markus Zahlbruckner and Rudi Reitberger On Vienna´s IZD-Tower there was a surprise win for Martin Krempl very narrowly defeating Markus Zahlbruckner and Rolf Majcen. Then the Linz winners. In the Nations Cup Austria rises to position 6.
September 15
Adaptions to the Rules:
With the cancellation of the Donauturm Treppenlauf in Vienna and the Go Vertical in Chicago we have lost two special races selected for factor 2. For each of these to compensate two other races have been selected which will be evaluated with factor 1 but don´t fall in the athletes limit of three races with factors 1 or 0,5.
These are instead of the Donauturm the Praha Run Up and another still to be defined race in Europe and instead of Go Vertical the successor Sky Rise Chicago and the Stair Climb to the Top in Los Angeles.

Here is the final list of all racers with 40 or more points to be downloaded in form of an Excel-sheet ---> Final Standings World Cup 2009

And of course it´s useful to know how this ranking is compiled - see and download the ranking system

See some statistics about what happened at the stairs this year ...
Among the Top10 ( both genders ) there are athletes from nine nations with Germany and United States 5, Italy 3, Mexico 2,....
Within the Top30 the United States are leading with 21 athlethes followed by Germany ( 10 ) and Italy ( 6 ). In this list 14 nations are ranked !

The system was designed by Sebastian Wurster a human medicine student from Germany. He has never competed himself in a stair race and no plans to do so in the near future but is so fascinated by this sport and by statistics that he has spent many hours .....
A very big "thank you" from the climbing community to him !
